Christ Church Cathedral

recommended by Sue Dobson

Dublin’s oldest building, this landmark Church of Ireland Cathedral was founded about 1030 by Sitriuc, King of the Dublin Norsemen. The present shape of the building dates from the 12th century and the entrance to the large medieval crypt with its forest of rough-stone pillars (take care on the steep steps) is just as it was in the 13th century. Major restoration work took place in the 1870s (funded by a Dublin whiskey distiller!).

The Cathedral is known for its music, both choral services and concerts. It’s a long tradition – the choir traces its origins to the choir school founded in 1480 and in 1742 famously took part in the very first performance of Handel’s Messiah.

Open daily. January to May and September to December, 9.45am to 5pm or 6pm; June to August 9am to 6pm. Limited access during services.
