The Castle Gardens and Coach House stand on the site of the Dubh Linn (Black Pool) that gave the city its name. In the heart of town, on a high ridge on the south side of the River Liffey, there’s been a fortification here from the earliest times of Dublin’s long history, from a Gaelic Ringfort through Danish fortress (part of the Viking defences can be seen in the Undercroft), Norman castle and the seat of English rule.

Much of today’s Castle dates from the Georgian era, but there’s an intact medieval tower. The magnificent State Apartments, renovated in 1746, are the venue for Ireland’s Presidencies of the European Union and used for state functions (when they are closed to visitors).

There are guided tours of the State Apartments, Undercroft and the gothic revival Chapel Royal with its fine vaulting and splendid plaster decoration.

Several museums are housed within the castle, including the unmissable Chester Beatty Library and its Silk Road Café.

Open Monday to Friday 10am to 4.45pm, Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays, 2pm to 4.45pm. Closed Good Friday, December 25 and 26, January 1.
