Marsh’s Library
Heaven for lovers of old books and history, Marsh’s Library is over 300 years old and its interior remains unchanged since it was founded as a public scholars’ library in 1701. It contains over 25,000 printed books from the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries on subjects including medicine, science, law, travel, navigation, mathematics, music and classical literature.
Admire the beautiful dark oak bookcases with their carved and lettered gables. They are topped with a mitre in recognition of the Library’s founder, Archbishop Narcissus Marsh. Many of the collections are still kept on the shelves allocated to them by Marsh and the first librarian, Huguenot refugee Elias Bouhéreau, when the Library opened. Don’t miss the elegant wired ‘cages’ where readers were locked in with rare books.
You’ll find Marsh’s Library just behind St Patrick’s Cathedral, about a 10-minute walk from Grafton Street. It is open to the public every day except Tuesday and Sunday.
Open weekdays except Tuesday, 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm. Saturday 10.30am to 1pm.
