St Patrick’s Cathedral
Dublin’s second (Church of Ireland) cathedral, this collegiate church outside the old city walls dates from 1191, built on the oldest Christian site in Dublin.
Like Christ Church Cathedral it is famed for its music – their combined choirs sang the first performance of Handel’s Messiah in St Patrick’s in 1742 – and it is the only cathedral in Ireland to sing two services every day (except Saturday). The writer and satirist Jonathan Swift was Dean from 1713 to 1747.
Living Stones is a permanent exhibition that explores the turbulent changes in St Patrick’s long history and reveals the cathedral’s place in the life of the city, past and present.
Open daily 9am to 5.30pm, except from November to February when it opens on Saturday from 9am to 5pm and Sunday 9am to 3pm. Last admission 30 minutes before closing.
Closed to visitors on December 24, 25 and 26.
