Temple Bar
Temple Bar is where some of the oldest streets in Dublin are to be found and of course the best nightlife within the mess of pubs, bars and restaurants squeezed all around and about. A word of warning though, it’s noisy, it’s busy, and it’s likely to cost more than anywhere else in the city. That said, if you just want to people watch or join in the craic (crack) this is the place to do it.
Right here is The Clarence Hotel, owned by Dublin’s most famous duo Bono and The Edge with its Tearoom restaurant, a fine dining experience in a fabulous setting but a little too fussy for my liking.
There are two places however that are well worth a visit. The Cill Airne, an old passenger ship permanently moored at Quay 16 which serves really good food in a really informal atmosphere (try the beef and Guinness stew) and one of Irelands top five restaurants, L’Ecrivain. Tucked away in Lower Baggot Street and owned and run by Derry and Sallyanne Clarke, this Michelin starred restaurant specialises in Irish and French cuisine that truly has to be experienced at all costs. My starter of Goats Cheese with red pepper risotto, aubergine caviar and balsamic foam was wonderful; this was followed by an even better dish of beef fillet with pickled mushrooms, ox tongue, celeriac and black pepper. Delicious.
