Child-free hotel in old market town is packed with antiques and fresh flowers
Wander through the elegant tree-lined squares of Soller and you’ll stumble on this grand old townhouse. It’s now a small luxury hotel and one of the best places to stay amid the Tramuntana Mountains that run down the western side of the Spanish island of Mallorca.
Hotel Salvia is like a period home furnished with antiques, where large shuttered windows overlook a delightful flower-filled walled garden. There are only six bedrooms, but each has a magnificent view of the valley plus satellite TV, a DVD player, mini-bar and internet connection. Décor is all drapes, cushions, wooden beams, four-posters, period bathrooms and fresh flowers. There’s no chic minimalism here.
Around the hotel you’ll find a fine 18th-century stone staircase, original Mallorcan ceramic tiles, sun-worshippers’ roof terrace, heated outdoor pool, collection of blue and white china, honesty bars, extensive DVD library and a stunning mother of pearl inlaid dressing mirror. It’s all a child-free environment - eclectic, relaxed and cosy.
You eat breakfast under the creepers on the terrace or in the mahogany chairs of the dining room. You must try the fresh orange juice made from Soller’s own renowned sweet fruit. For dinner, stroll through the ancient cobbled streets to one of Soller’s many restaurants.
By day the Port of Soller is a nice walk away or a ride on a vintage tram that runs down to the harbour. There’s also an old wooden train that rattles through the almond groves to Palma for a day out browsing the shops, cafes and galleries of the island’s capital. The drive from Soller along the mountainous west coast is spectacular - but it’s even better from the sea. The hotel can arrange private boat trips with a picnic and skipper to explore this coastline.
