St Stephen’s Green

recommended by Sue Dobson

With its tree-lined walks, landscaped gardens, ornamental lake and fountain, this 22 acre (9 hectare) city centre park is a peaceful sanctuary to retreat to from the busy shopping streets that surround it. The colourful flowerbeds and herbaceous borders are a visual treat and there are popular summer lunchtime concerts on the traditional Victorian bandstand.

At the top of Grafton Street and opposite the big Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre, the impressively grand entrance to the Green commemorates the bravery of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers in the Boer War. Within the leafy gardens are statues, busts and memorials to famous Irish patriots and writers. Look for James Joyce, Robert Emmet, James Clarence Mangan, Countess Markievicz, the powerful Wolf Tone memorial and the W B Yeats garden.

Open Monday to Saturday 7.30am until dusk, Sunday and public holidays 9.30am until dusk. Christmas Day, 10am to 1pm.
