Post Ranch Inn is a real taste of the Big Sur right on Highway One

The Big Sur is a fmous stretch of spectacular coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles in California, USA. The Ventana mountains swoop right down to an unspoilt coastline and the road winds around the mountains looking down on the seascapes below. Just off Highway One is the Post Ranch Inn - a luxurious modern boutique hotel on the cliffs. It’s suitably California - a combination of wild design and extreme eco-sensitivity.

The Inn displays all the ingenuity and craziness that the West Coast is renowned for. ‘Rooms’ include some of the world’s most luxurious tree houses and wooden cabins. Most have great views. All offer memorable experiences.
There's a relaxed if slightly self-conscious atmosphere but the architecture is modern and dramatic - blending redwood, glass and steel into sweeping curves, arches and skylights. Inside, the individual guest buildings' design is all about uncluttered simplicity - with muted earthy colours, exposed wood and plain fabrics.

Hotels often say all their rooms are different but here they really are: guests may check into a triangular room on stilts nine feet off the ground or a house modelled on the shape of a butterfly. Wherever you stay you’ll get a wood-burning stove, private spa tub and terrace, digital music system with 45 channels and complimentary walking sticks… but no televisions or alarm clocks.

Spa treatments can be ordered in your room. Having a massage on the special private deck overlooking the ocean is a big favourite among California’s rich and famous, many of whom are regulars. And the Inn’s Sierra Mar restaurant is perched on the cliff edge and is mainly made of glass to maximise the droolworthy views from the tables. The food is as good as it gets in California and the wine list has won awards.

Is there anything to do apart from read Rolling Stone or listen to Grateful Dead albums? Some relax by the pools or take mountain hikes, others embrace the Californian spirit still further with daily yoga sessions, meditation and star-gazing talks. The less esoteric take a short drive to the picturesque towns of Monterey and Carmel for shopping and sightseeing.

Price guide: between US $550 - 2185 per person per night depending on the accommodation building you choose and what its view is like.
