Miami West Intercontinental Hotel

An easy, efficient mix of business hotel and travellers' stop-over.

This is a fairly upmarket hotel between the airport and downtown that won't linger in your memory but should be a good safe choice. The beaches are a 20-minute cab ride away. The Dorel area is a typical low-rise grid of busy flat straight roads where pedestrians are a rarity. But there are a few good diners, restaurants, shops and malls to walk to around here. There’s even a golf course close by.

Incidently, don’t confuse this Intercontinental with the other one on the sea-shore which is more of a glamorous resort. This is a mix of business hotel and travellers’ stop-over, with a free hourly shuttle bus to the airport.

West Miami Intercontinental has a grand entrance between rows of palms and there’s a friendly reception area with nice staff when I was there. It seems smaller than a 265-room hotel - and that's good in my book.

Straight-ahead from reception, through a glass wall, is the patio garden and seductive T-shaped outdoor swimming pool. The smart grill restaurant is to the left, the gym to the right. Both were empty while I stayed but both seemed much better than you’d expect for an airport hotel. There’s even a jogging track outside.

The air-conditioned rooms are big and well equipped but without much character and you’ll pay for extras like wifi ($10) or TV films. Business travellers will like the desk space, ergonomic chair and three phones. Tourists will like the soft bedding and big bathrooms. Some have nice views of the garden or pool - others look over the car park or busy roads outside.

Pay more and you’ll get on the Club InterContinental floor with daily full American breakfast then cocktails and hors d’oeuvres each evening. Otherwise you’ll pay extra for breakfast.

Note that there are only 150 non-smoking rooms - so if that matters to you make sure you ask when booking. Oh and it’s very wheelchair friendly.
