Getting around Dublin
The best way to take in the sights and sounds of Dublin is to walk, but the city has great public transport systems. As well as local buses (Dublin Bus) and Nitelink late night buses (Monday to Saturday) there’s the LUAS tram system, a state-of-the-art Light Rail Transit system with high speed services running on two tramlines, red and green, and the DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) trains that run the length of the coastline on a wonderfully scenic route that shows you there’s more to Dublin than its city centre.
Taxis are plentiful but the meter seems to tick pretty expensively when the traffic’s bad (which is most of the time).
If you’re arriving by air
Dublin International Airport is 12km to the north of the city centre.
Travel options into town are:
Aircoach, an express luxury coach service serving major hotels in the city centre and South Dublin.
Airlink 747/748, an express service serving the city centre, the central bus station (Bus Aras) and Connelly, Tara Street and Heuston train stations. Journey time about 30 minutes.
Dublin Bus 41 or 16a, journey time about 45 minutes.
Taxi. The fare is about €30, depending on traffic conditions.
If you’re arriving by sea
Dublin has two ferry terminals: Dublin Port, close to the city with a local bus linking the port and central bus station (Bus Aras), and Dun Laoghaire to the south. From there it’s about 20 minutes into the city centre on the DART train.
