The Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin
One of Dublin’s most favoured institutions, The Shelbourne hotel dates back to 1824 when St Stephen’s Green was a field where the Lord Mayor grazed his cattle. It’s been at the heart of Dublin society ever since, favoured by writers, visiting heads of state and movie stars, and the Horseshoe Bar is still the most famous meeting place in the city.
A complete makeover (at the cost of over €40million) in 2007 restored its architectural glory, keeping the atmosphere, the Georgian furniture and the chandeliers but adding such mod cons as LCD flat-screen TVs, CD players, high-speed Internet access and glitzy marble bathrooms in the luxuriously appointed bedrooms.
The Lord Mayor’s Lounge is famed for its afternoon tea and The Saddle Room restaurant combines tradition with an open show kitchen and oyster bar.
