Bewleys’s Café and Restaurant
A Dublin institution and iconic landmark, Bewley’s opened in 1927, drawing inspiration from the great European cafés of Paris and Vienna, exotic Oriental tearooms and Egyptian architecture.
The centrepiece of the café was, and still is, the six magnificent stained glass windows commissioned from renowned artist Harry Clarke.
Bewley’s Grafton Street immediately became an essential part of the literary, artistic, cultural and social life of the city. James Joyce mentioned it Dubliners, Patrick Kavanagh, Samuel Beckett and Sean O’Casey were often to be seen there.
Today it’s always packed (they serve over a million customers a year). Go for the speciality teas, coffees and freshly baked cakes and patisserie, the full traditional Irish breakfasts, and the pizza, pasta and Mediterranean salads, or for a beer or glass of wine. The Café Theatre on the second floor has lunch shows and evening cabaret.
