Dublin’s Old Town – Temple Bar
Temple Bar is Dublin’s ‘Left Bank’, its maze of cobbled streets a bohemian enclave within the heart of the city on the south bank of the Liffey. Back in the 18th century it was the centre of economic activity. All goods shipped into Ireland went through the old Customs House on Wellington Quay (where The Clarence Hotel now stands) and the area was full of warehouses and various centres of entertainment, from theatres to saloons and brothels.
When the Customs House moved downstream, Temple Bar went into decline and for a long time it was a no-go area. Plans were made to build bus depot there, but in the 1980s painters, actors, sculptors and musicians began moving into the rundown sites, attracted by cheap rents. The new residents lobbied hard to keep their Temple Bar, the bus depot idea was shelved and the area redeveloped.
A great favourite with locals and tourists alike, it has buzzing bars, live music, quirky shops, myriad pubs, clubs, cafés and restaurants, and accommodation options from budget to 5-star sublime.
Be there for the weekend markets – food on Saturdays at Meeting House Square, books on Saturdays and Sundays on Temple Bar Square and the Saturday Designer Mart on Cows Lane – and for the myriad free festivals and fun events year round.
