One of the most recognisable sites in Florence is the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, or Duomo.

The distinctive cathedral, with its green and pink marble exterior, rises up from one of the city’s main squares and is a must-see for any self-respecting tourist.

Its landmark dome - the largest brick dome ever constructed - can be seen for miles around and visitors are invited to check it out at certain times of the day.

Work on the Duomo began in 1296 and took nearly 150 years to complete. It is one of Italy’s biggest cathedrals and the entire centre of Florence – including the Duomo - was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982.
