With one of the highest ratios of restaurants to population in all of the UK, choosing a restaurant in Edinburgh can be difficult. But ask anyone who lives in the Old Town where they would go for a cheap and filling meal, everyone will point you in one direction: The Tempting Tattie

A ‘wee shop’ situated on the bend of Jeffrey Street with picture postcard views of Calton Hill, the Tempting Tattie serves up heaping portions of baked potatoes to a steady stream of regular customers and in the know tourists. The list of topping combinations is endless; for a classic Scottish treat, why not try the belly-filling haggis and cheese. For a lighter option, opt instead for pineapple and cheese, or perhaps tuna salad would appeal. The best part – even the largest portion and most expensive toppings will not cost you more than £5, and you’ll have enough food to feed a family of four.

While there is no dining area officially, several barstools are placed by the glass window, allowing patrons to enjoy their meal while watching the world go by on the street beyond. Should the weather be favourable, why not get yours takeaway and head down to one of the gardens off the Royal Mile?

The owner is a well known Old Town personality, offering cheeky service with a devilish smile, which explains why the Tempting Tattie has so much repeat business. So if you’re in Edinburgh and looking for a cheap meal and to hang out with the locals, look no further than the ‘wee’ baked potato shop on Jeffrey Street.
