The Godolphin Arms hotel in Marazion, a beachside pub with bedrooms offering the best sea view in Cornwall.

The Godolphin Arms hotel probably hasn't got the best food, the best drink, the best rooms or the best atmosphere... but it does have what must be the best view of any pub with rooms anywhere in Cornwall.

The Godolphin Arms hotel stands on the sea wall right in front of one of Britain’s great sea views - across Mount’s Bay from the Lizard in the east to Mousehole in the west. Stone steps lead from the pub onto the Blue Flag beach. At low tide you can cross a causeway to the National Trust's tiny island of St Michael's Mount, at high tide a small ferry sails there from in front of The Godolphin Arms hotel's open terraces.

The Godolphin Arms hotel's elegant period façade mirrors its aristocratic heritage as part of the St Aubyn estate. It’s still owned by Lord St Leven’s son, James St Aubyn, who lives just across the tidal sands in the stately home on top of the Mount island.

Inside the Godolphin Arms there's a mix of styles: the smart restaurant seems to be all crisp white linen and napkins stuffed in glasses, while the pine balustrades of a huge open plan café-pub are reminiscent of motorway services. The rugged wood décor of the Gig Bar downstairs - which has regular live bands - suggests a youthful surfers' beach bar. The outside terrace is probably the best if the weather's good. Wherever you sit the food is much better than you'd expect. My seafood salad was crisp and fresh, although the view kept distracting me. Locals are very keen on the Sunday carvery here too.

More importantly, most of the ten bedrooms have THE view, some through floor-to-ceiling bay windows. There’s a scattering of balconies, four-posters, bunk-beds for kids, and massive bathrooms. Décor is unexpectedly funky - with paint effects and jazzy seaside colours. The manageress claims that on a high spring tide you can lean from one bedroom window and touch the sea.
