Contemporary cool meets old-time Sicilian Masseria at Caol Ishka Hotel, just outside the urban fringe of historic Siracusa. The name is Gaelic (co-owner Gareth hails from Ireland), but the feel is designer Italian.
Old stone barns along the river Anapo have been given a distinctly modernist feel with cool white and industrial-grey walls, sleek chrome bathrooms with deep tubs and walk-in showers, spot lighting and designer label furniture. Splashes of exuberant retro – frothy glass chandeliers, ornate gilt mirrors, decadent velvet chaise longues, vibrant fabrics and gold-leaf-look doors – set it all off with huge panache.
Each room is individually designed, six have private verandas and if you can’t live without technology fear not; all rooms come with LCD televisions, DVD players and internet connections.
If you would rather forget about the digital world sun-soak by the infinity-edge pool or set off for the sights of Siracusa, just 2km away. Alternatively book yourselves in for relaxation massages, wander the gardens or the nearby Flume Ciane natural reserve, or if you’re feeling active hire bikes or even canoes to explore the area.
The hotel is also close to beach resorts such as Isola just 3km away, Arenella 8km away, Fontane Bianche 12km away and Vendicari Natural Reserve about 35km away.
By evening be sure to dine in the hotel’s swish Zafferano Bistrot, whose seasonally-inspired dishes include marinated grouper with tomato confit, breaded scabbard fish with eucalyptus honey, and beef fillet with a delicious cerasuolo wine sauce.
