Miami Seaquarium - Dolphin Encounter
The Dolphin Interaction program at the Miami Seaquarium offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The 38-acre marine park is the oldest oceanarium in the United States, at over 50 years old. But the new Dolphin Harbor exhibit is the main reason I chose to go to the marine entertainment park.
The minimum age for the Dolphin Encounter is five years old, so our daughters were just old enough to participate. We were suited up in matching wetsuits and led into a classroom for a brief orientation, learning how to identify dolphin gender and being instructed to not touch eyes, ears, and it's blowhole.
The group was broken into four people each, and our family waded through the chilly knee-deep water behind the trainer and over to meet Balboa, our two-year old dolphin. We watched as the trainer slapped the water, blew her whistle, and rewarded Balboa with fish from her small cooler. Surprisingly my daughters had no problem touching the raw, smelly fish and feeding the dolphin. We each had the opportunity to lean over and kiss Balboa, and before we knew it, the encounter was over.
Older children can participate in the Dolphin Odyssey program, where they can ride a dolphin.
