I know, you’ve probably never heard of this tiny town of less than 300 residents.  But Whittier, Alaska is an embarkation and debarkation cruise port at the north end of an Alaska Cruise, welcoming more than 700,000 visitors every year.  Not to be confused with the Whittier in California, this Whittier is 100 kilometres south east of Anchorage, Alaska.

The most unusual feature of this town is the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, a single-lane combination highway and railroad tunnel that enables cars and trains to take turns passing through.  It's the only access into the town.  Many visitors to Whittier use the town as a stepping stone to or from Anchorage, since Anchorage is the gateway to Denali, Fairbanks, and beyond.  There’s a regular train, bus and shuttle service connecting Whittier and Anchorage if you don’t want to stick around.

Although there are plenty of activities to choose from in Whittier such as whale watching, glacier tours, and kayaking, the choice of accommodations is limited, and therefore the reason why most visitors choose to stay in Anchorage when arriving to or departing from Whittier by cruise ship.
