Knickerbocker Bar and Grill, New York City
In the heart of New York's Greenwich Village, the Knickerbocker Bar and Grill is a fun but smart restaurant. Established in 1977, it's become known for its steaks and its jazz.
The evening I visited there was a pianist playing in the bar/lounge area at the front of the restaurant providing pleasant background music for those tucking into their meals in the dining room at the back. Music is performed at the weekends, and starts at 9:45pm, Fridays and Saturdays.
The venue is nicely decorated with leather seating and brass rails, and the wood-panelled walls are home to a collection of memorabilia and posters with a New York theme. Its century-old marble bar is where Charles Lindbergh signed his contract to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Such is its popularity among locals that the restaurant claims it has regular celebrity guests including Richard Gere, Alec Baldwin and Susan Sarandon, but I didn’t spot anyone famous on my visit.
The menu is large and varied, with everything from seared yellow-fin tuna to roast organic chicken and various pasta dishes. A three-course meal with wine could cost about $50. It depends on what you have since the restaurant is most famous for its T-bone steaks that start at $39.95, which isn’t cheap. You can save your money and still have steak by opting for the Bistro menu's steak frites with chunky fries and black truffle butter for $23.75. For a night out in what feels like a place offering genuine American cuisine, good service and a great atmosphere, it’s worth a trip.
