I once fell in an icy river halfway up Scafell Pike in the dark. I bet I wouldn’t have if I’d had one of these strapped to my head.
The Varta Sports Head Light is a portable, lightweight torch that straps round your forehead, leaving your hands free. That’s not a new idea of course, these head torches are very handy for adventurous stuff like camping or climbing at night - and are so helpful for a broken-down motorist trying to fix the car after dark too.
There are brighter ones out there than this 1-watt LED but this light has several compensating features. I really like the two rotating diffuser lenses that give a more scattered light for general illumination and a red light to help maintain night vision. The light comes with its two AAA batteries (hurray!) and there are three light modes: high, low and signalling strobe mode.
It is also water and impact resistant (in case you fall in a river at night I suppose) and has an adjustable, elasticated head strap for comfortable wear.
This little gadget for travellers was sent to The Kitmaster before it officially launched - so give it a couple of weeks or so to get in all the shops.
