Arundel Castle - A Great Day Out

recommended by Gilly Pickup

Pop-up-book-perfect, Arundel Castle is home to the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk. This medieval castle contains England’s finest selection of 16th century continental furniture, artworks by Canaletto and Gainsborough and the gold and enamel rosary Mary Queen of Scots carried with her to her execution.

Arundel Castle's oldest feature is the ‘Motte’, a man-made mound on which stands the Keep. You’ll need plenty of puff to climb the worn, dark, narrow staircase but if you make it to the top, you will be rewarded by stunning views from the battlements.

The tranquil gardens including peach house and vinery are a feast for the senses with enticing aromas, glorious textures and seductive colours. Re-enactment events with jousters and jesters, wandering minstrels and have-a-go archery are held in the castle grounds throughout the season as well as flying displays by birds of prey.
