Pöstlingberg hill – A Linz landmark
Starting at the Main Square, a modern electric tram glides effortlessly up the 537m Pöstlingberg hill, through woods and past smart houses tucked among trees. In a matter of minutes, you’re into the country and the panoramic view from the top encompasses the city, the winding River Danube, forested hills, farms, fields and distant villages to a horizon of misty blue mountains.
The light railway was inaugurated in 1898. With a track length of 4.14km, the Pöstlingbergbahn covers a 225m difference in elevation in 20 minutes and is the steepest adhesion railway in Europe.
Crowning the hill, the twin-towered Baroque pilgrimage basilica is popular for weddings. Children enjoy the Grottenbahn, where, riding on the ‘dragon express’ mini-train, they travel through the world of gnomes and fairytale scenes. The little Linz Zoo, further down the hill, is also very popular with families.
Meander along walking trails among tall trees where birdsong drifts through the still air. Relax over coffee and cake on the terrace of the Saphir Lounge and drink in the view. Or indulge in a traditional lunch at the Pöstlingberg Schlössl restaurant. For less formal food, head for the Schlössl’s beer garden, where the view is impressive.
Tip: do this trip in the morning. On a clear day you can see for miles.
The Pöstlingbergbahn operates daily, every 30 minutes, from 6am to 10pm, 7.30am to 10pm on Sundays and holidays. Return fare €5.60, children (6-15) €2.80
