San Francisco to Las Vegas. A classic drive? You bet.
Driving the Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco

For many visitors to the USA, a driving holiday is the only way to get the real big-country experience and there can be few finer routes to take than the classic drive along Highway 1 to Los Angeles and then the other great one through the Mojave Desert to Las Vegas.

But what is there along this famous route that makes it such a legendary drive and does it still live up to the billing? Well, what you need is a frank and open example of a two week trip that gets behind the hype and the hearsay to show you how to really enjoy this classic drive.

Days 1 to 4: San Francisco

Paul Kantner of Jefferson Airplane once said ‘San Francisco is 49 square miles surrounded by reality’ and he wasn’t wrong. This, the most European of American cities has 160 years of historic influences packed into it. The Gold Rush in 1849 that started it all, the writers of the ‘beat’ generation, the hippies of Summer Love in the late 60’s, the multi-cultural and diverse neighbourhoods and restaurants, the cable cars and let’s not forget Alcatraz and The Golden Gate Bridge, the iconic symbol of the City by the Bay.

It’s a hilly but very walk-able city, and a stroll from Union Square can lead you to the Italian influenced North Beach, Fisherman’s Wharf, passing through Chinatown the largest one outside Asia. One thing, bring a fleece

Important car tip!

Most of the hotels charge for parking, so don’t pick up your car until the day you start your drive so leave around three or four days to see the sights. You can get into town from the airport by taking a shuttle from Level 1. They’re good value and drop you right at your door.
