Day 7 - PCH to Santa Cruz and Monterey
Once you get on Highway 1 or The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) you begin to understand just what a fantastic part of the world this is. There are miles of often deserted beaches and small bohemian towns. Twenty-seven miles on from Half Moon Bay you’ll come to the Ano Nuevo State Reserve, where they breed the largest number of elephant seals in the world. You'll need to book ahead to see them between December and March though as it’s peak mating and birthing season then.
Make sure that you take a stop at Santa Cruz about an hour north of Monterey Bay, It's surfer heaven. If it's breakfast or lunch time then head for Zachary’s restaurant at 819 Pacific Avenue open 7am - 2.30pm, the place only the locals know about. Join the line for some huge portions and order Mike's Mess!
Monterey itself still retains evidence of its colonial past with its old quarter Spanish and Mexican adobe buildings worth an exploration. The centrepiece attraction here though is the Aquarium in Cannery Row. Set over 3 acres, there are over 1.6 million gallons of water attractions to gaze at including a three storey underwater Kelp Forest and the Outer Bay where sharks and barracuda glide by.
Stop for the night at the Gosby House Inn, a victorian house in Pacific Grove no more than a 5 minute walk to the beach. You get a great breakfast and some afternoon nibbles with cheese and wine included.in the room price. www.gosbyhouseinn.com Also, Jabberwock Inn, an old craftsman's house full of lacy knick knacks and old world character and great views of the Pacific. www.jabberwockinn.com
