Pebble Beach Golf Club, California
18th at Pebble Beach Golf Course

Pebble Beach, California.

6,816 yards  Par 72

Possibly one of the most famous par 5 holes in golf, the 18th winds its way alongside the mighty Pacific Ocean. Pebble Beach is part of the luxury resort complex within the famous 17 Mile Drive on the Monterey peninsula. Spyglass Hill, Spanish Bay and Cypress Point courses are here as well, all fabulous too, but for me Pebble is the jewel in the crown.

Still a public course, although you’d hardly know it from the price tag, you simply book a tee time to play, although you’ll need to book way ahead.

But what a prospect lies in store. After the first 4 holes, the next seven are all along the ocean including the 7th, a scary 106 yard par 3 facing straight down into the Pacific from an elevated tee.

With the US Open due to be held at Pebble Beach again in 2010 it is still up there as one of the all time great courses, and while you’re being extravagant, you can combine it with a night or two at the resort too. A top drawer never-to-be-forgotten experience.

$450 per round, rooms from £500. Look out for the sound of bagpipes from the lone piper every night at Spanish Bay!
