Where to Eat, Shop and Snooze in Rome

Stroll round the Colosseum and soak up the atmosphere of centuries gone by. The Roman Forum was where the ancient movers and shakers of the day conducted their business; banking, trading and shopping. No visit to Rome would be complete without tossing three coins in the fountain – legend says that will guarantee your return to the Eternal City. Don’t miss a visit to Campo de' Fiori, one of the only piazzas in Rome without a church. In the mornings it hosts the city's most picturesque market, while during evenings it is transformed into a dynamic see-and-be-seen nightspot.

A couple of stylish restaurants in Rome:

L’Altro Mastai, Via Giraud 53 (+39 06 6830 1296 / www. laltromastai.it).

A creative Italian restaurant with elegant décor where chef Fabio Baldassare prepares a menu that changes four times a year.

Myosotis, Via della Vaccarella 3/5, Piazza Navona (+39 06 686 5554)

Not cheap, but delicious food and great service.

Rome Shopaholics must visit:

Federico Buccellati, Via Condotti 31 (06 679 0329).

Renowned as one of the most highly regarded gold and silversmiths in Italy, Buccellati specialises in beautiful, neo-Renaissance designs.

For high street clothes shopping go to Via del Corso or Via Nazionale. Interesting boutiques can be found along Via del Governo Vecchio, in the Centro Storico.

Recommended hotel in Rome:

Snooze in luxury in the Hotel Rome Cavalieri, Via Alberto Cadlolo 101, (tel +39 06 35091 www.RomeCavalieri.com) a tranquil retreat in the heart of this frenetic city. Treat yourself to High Tea, a tradition in this hotel, served in grand style by white-gloved waiters. Not only finger sandwiches and scones are served here, how about fruit sushi, Quail’s eggs, caviar, truffles and canapés served on vermeil spoons?
