Dating from 1858, Gerbeaud is Budapest's most famous coffeehouse.
In days gone by it was popular with notables of the day including Franz Liszt. After all, this top drawer coffee house bursting with crystal chandeliers and gilded tables was a place where those-and-such-as-those clamoured to be seen. Sissi, wife of Emperor Franz Joseph like to drop in whenever she was in town too.
Nowadays the cafe is decorated in fine wood panelling, lavish brocade wall coverings and has marble tables to enhance the nostalgia feeling while still retaining a relaxing atmosphere.
The cafe also has a pub which sells draught Pilsener beer and traditional Hungarian dishes. The Onyx Restaurant recently opened here too. Its hallmarks are gourmet meals made exclusively from fresh ingredients by award-winning chefs.
