Arthur’s Tavern, West Village, New York

recommended by Wendy Connett

Arthur’s Tavern is a New York institution in Greenwich Village with some of the best live Jazz and Blues music in the city.

But the music isn’t the only reason to come. The crowd is eclectic and quirky to say the least. This is the New York people come to see. Sitting at the bar we were book ended by a transvestite and a man wearing a pith helmet that for reasons unknown brought recorded music (classical) and listened to it with noise cancelling headphones.

Locals, tourists and the bridge and tunnel crowd seem to commingle peacefully amidst an array of holiday decorations - Easter, Christmas and New Year - which remain up year round. Get there early if you prefer to snag a table. A two-drink minimum is required.

But the prime real estate may be at the back of the bar where you might end up sitting next to top shelf musicians who pop in and join the band for a song or two. Cramped and crowded expect standing room only during peak party hours.

Arthur’s is located in the West Village at 57 Grove Street. Opened in 1937 the nightclub features live music seven days a week.
