Souks, or the covered markets that line the labyrinthine lanes of Medina, are as legendary as the city itself, and no Morocco holiday is completed without a visit.

Located on the caravan routes between the Middle East and Africa, Marrakech was an important centre for trade from the 11th century to the 18th century. Medina's markets are a living legacy of those times.

If you love to shop, haggle or bag a bargain, and even if you don't, the souks are a delight. The heady mix of smells, sights and sounds is at once exhilarating and confusing.

With rows and rows of glittering Moroccan lamps, brightly painted tagines, leather bags and beautiful Berber rugs calling out to you, there is no point in wondering where you may be headed. Leave the maps alone and step into an Arabian Nights adventure. As time and space lose meaning it is easy to imagine here the magic lamps and carpets of Sheherzade's stories. And, if you've practiced your haggling skills beforehand you may even take one home with you.

You don't need to be loaded to enjoy the shopping experience in the souks. Organised by the goods they sell - pottery, leather goods, spices, perfumes, metalwork, lamps, mirrors and carpets - the souks have something for everyone. For less than 20 pounds you could get a beautiful metal lamp, a tagine, a leather backpack or a jar of perfume.
