Vibrant Xiamen!
Known as the "Pearl of the East China Sea", Xiamen (pronounced "SHYAH-muhn"; also known as Amoy) is a city located on the east coast of Fujian Province.
In 1980, soon after the Cultural Revolution came to a conclusion, the government instituted Xiamen as one of the first four "Special Economic Zones" (SEZ) to encourage development, both from domestic and foreign investors. The opening of Xiamen to foreign investment has transformed both the city and the surrounding area to be on par with the other big cities in China, such as Beijing and Shanghai. Xiamen has effectively become a "Gateway to China" that excels in the pharmaceutical, electronic, aviation, textile and tourist industries.
There has been much advancement in the past twenty-five years. Since 1983, Xiamen has enjoyed the title of being a sister city to Cardiff, Wales. These days, Xiamen is best known as the host of the China International Fair for Investment and Trade held annually in the second week of September to attract foreign direct investment into the Chinese mainland. The 2008 fair was attended by the former UK Deputy Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. John Prescott MP and other senior British delegates on a trade mission. The other major annual trade fair, held in the second week of April, is the China Xiamen Machinery & Electronics Exhibition (CXMEE), which is authorized by the Ministry of Commerce of P.R.C. CXMEE is renowned for being the leading specialized exhibition of machinery & electronics products.
It can be said that Xiamen, like many other Chinese cities, has benefited economically from the success of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, and continues to excel and flourish as a major center of industrialization and tourism.
