I guess if Xiamen was an entity that stood by itself in the middle of China, then it should be classed as a place of interest on its own—they don’t call it the “Jewel of Fujian Province” for nothing you know. If one had a stopover for a couple of days in Xiamen, the following would make a nice itinerary. Start with Gulangyu (literally meaning “Drum Waves”). Gulangyu is home to attractions such as the “Underwater World” and the Piano Museum. The Underwater World is predominantly admired by many tourists and is host to a variety of marine life that includes penguins, dolphins, sharks and sea lions. The Piano Museum, opened in 2000, consists of two major exhibition halls that host many concerts throughout the year, as well as an Organ Museum and a Music Academy that trains aspiring future professional musicians. The museum itself is one of the world’s largest piano museums consisting of 30 pianos from around the world, some of which are over a century old. Equally enchanting are the Shuzhuang Garden and the Universal Architecture Exposition. Both of these are beautifully created with man-made gardens and natural caves.

The highlight of any tour to Xiamen would be to spend some time at the Sunlight Rock. Located in the southern part of the island, here you can get a 360-degree panoramic view of the whole city on one side, while on the other you can just about see the islands of Taiwan on a clear day.

Xiamen Island itself is known for two main attractions, one is the Xiamen University and the other is the Hulishan Fortress, which offers some great views of the ocean and the city, and if anything it feels more like a park than a Fortress! The Fortress was constructed in 1896 as part of a plan to build a defense system along the coast.
