Are you ready for the ultimate dining spectacular? Forget culinary delights and fancy napkins, all you need in San Francisco is a big top and a box of tricks.
Now in its ninth year, this crazy dinner show is still luring in the masses, with a full house practically every night! I went along with two girl friends to load up on razzle, dazzle and some truly theatrical cocktails.
You can’t miss the circus tent, standing out like a sore thumb on San Francisco’s Pier 29 along The City’s Embarcadero. Teatro ZinZanni is staged quite uniquely in a luxurious European Spiegeltent! When you first step inside, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’ve entered a Parisian boudoir, filled with pretty questionable characters. But that’s just the thing. They are characters. And they’re about to be kicking up a storm as you clear your dinner plate.
Before landing in San Francisco in 2000, Teatro ZinZanni wowed the masses with a sold-out 14 month run in Seattle. It’s pretty easy to see why people fell in love with it. You’ll probably never have another dinner surrounded by singing men dressed as female gypsies, plate-spinners and balding short men hiding in boxes. It’s bizarre!
The show Gypsy Moon centres loosely around the mystical arrival of a travelling bunch of nomads, a Cinderella type who longs to be a singer, and one man’s obsession with a silent waitress. In-between songs of love, woe and intrigue, world-class practitioners of some of the oldest and most time honoured traditions in entertainment strut their stuff. They weave around your tables, drag you in to participate at any given moment (wear something nice, girls!) and even serve each course as a part of the show.
Put simply, Teatro ZinZanni is part dinner party, part theatrical spectacular, and part crazy dream that come the morning, you won’t quite be sure really happened.
