Affinia Shelburne Hotel, Midtown, New York City
New York’s Midtown often gets overlooked – not as funky as the Village, not as swanky as the Upper East Side, not as memorable as Downtown. But with Grand Central station and the Empire State building among other stops in the neighbourhood, a hotel here – especially a boutique one like the Affinia Shelburne Hotel - is a good bet.
The newly refurbished Affinia Shelburne, on East 37th Street and Lexington Ave, ticks the boutique box as well as practicality. Part of a small chain, it’s got all the mod cons like a pillow menu, Aveda toiletries in the bathroom and beds so comfy it’s tough to escape, as well as great service, from the doorman to the cheerful check-in.
Plus there’s some fun extras in the shape of their Experience kits – the Walking Tour version comes with an MP3 player loaded with a tour and workout playlists, a city walks deck of cards, map, pedometer and towel, while the BYOB option has a wine carrier and key, wine books, discount for a local wine store and picnic blanket. Cheers!
One word of warning if you’re there on business – there’s a charge for internet, whether you use the in-room wireless or the lobby desktops.
Formerly the Shelburne Murray Hill, it’s home to Rare Bar & Grill for burger fans, a rooftop bar overlooking Manhattan (where rumour has it Fred Astaire used to play mini golf – now sadly not an option).
Rates start at around $240 plus tax per night, with special offers running regularly.

Sounds like a good hotel but sadly it is out of my budget. Can you recommend any cheaper hotels?
