Extra Virgin Italian restaurant, New York City
No-one has ever accused New York of not having enough good Italian restaurants. But skip the pizza and pasta joints for Extra Virgin, a Mediterranean gem in Manhattan’s West Village.
Cosy tables, stripped brick walls and super smily staff really are the icing on the cake (or on the Peanut Butter Brownie Sundae). Extra Virgin's food is seasonal – try to get there during the autumn for the delicious Butternut Squash ravioli – and focused on fish and pasta, although with enough veggie and meat dishes to keep everyone happy, as well as a string of daily specials.
There’s no booking if you’re in a group of less than six, and at busy times, be prepared to wait for an hour for a table – although as you can chill out with a drink at the bar while you do, it’s no great hardship, especially if you go for the Extra Virgin cocktail, a white Cosmopolitan.
Slightly off the beaten track, this Italian restaurant always packed with locals although the Zagat listing encourages diners from further afield as well.
Go early, stay late, and try the fries with gorgonzola dip.
Prices start from around $20 for main courses.
