Grimaldi’s – the best pizza in New York City
Paper tablecloths, a far from intimate atmosphere, and it’s not even in Manhattan – but as a string of celebs and big names will attest, Grimaldi’s pizza really is the best in New York.
Tucked away in Brooklyn, take a look back over the Hudson River to the New York skyline, and then hurry yourself inside the restaurant. Service is more likely to be with a grunt (not unfriendly, just efficient) than a smile, and you’ll need to keep your elbows tucked in.
But it’s worth it for the pizza. Proper Italian style, the bases are thin, crispy and light, cooked in a coal-fired brick oven (cooking in one of these is a dying art apparently), to give it its traditional smoky flavour. The sauce is rich, tomatoey and scalding, and you pick your own toppings for an extra one to four dollars each on top of a standard base. There’s an option of choosing a calzone or a white sauce if you’re feeling experimental, but otherwise it’s a straightforward build-your-own menu.
Go with a friend – even the small version, at 16 inches, will leave you groaning – or even better, with a few friends, so you can try as many of the toppings as you can squeeze in.
Starters and desserts are almost non-existent, but let’s face it, you won’t have room anyway. But there’s beer and wine aplenty, and you can always live in hope of spotting Vince Vaughan, Robert Duvall or Ray Liotta, just three of the Grimaldi Pizza Restaurant's A-list fans.
