Restaurant le Richelieu, Bergerac
Set in the small medieval French town of Bergerac, Restaurant le Richelieu is exactly what you’d imagine a French bistro to be. This al fresco restaurant boasts views of Bergerac’s most famous square, Place Patissiere.
Its outside dining is perfect for a lazy summer afternoon but the crème de la crème of this restaurant is its interior. Situated at the back of this small eatery are the remains of an old wine cellar, housing some of the finest (and oldest) wines from the Dordogne area.
Offering both set, and a la carte, menus the finest thing to purchase has to be its locally produced wine. This region is famous for its tipple and rightly so. Even if wine isn’t your thing, it’s well worth sampling a taste between its low cave ceilings and cold stone walls. Prices start at €12 a bottle.
Le Richelieu’s menu is rustic but to really experience French cuisine, I’d recommend trying the set menu. For €12.90, the menu includes a choice of starters, mains and dessert, and is by far one of the cheapest establishments in the old town. Serving genuine French country cuisine, choose between potage (thick soup), jambon et melon (ham and melon) or salade di gissard (gizzard salad) for starters; mains is a choice between confit de canard (duck breast), agneau avec les herbes (lamb with herbs) or boeuf avec poivre (beef with pepper sauce); dessert ranges from the creamy crème caramel to sorbet de poire (pear sorbet).
Each plate is as delicious as the next and a great introduction to Bergerac’s local cuisine.
