Carnival
The major event is Carnival, which takes place at the end of January and beginning of February. A myriad of marvellous masked Venetians and tourists parade up and down Piazza San Marco. There are masked parties all over the city and it’s possible to book for balls in advance in the smartest hotels or in places like “La Fenice” theatre.
The Regattas
Venice is famous for its Regattas of which there are nearly 100 every year. The most spectacular are:
The “Regata Storica” that takes place the first Sunday of September.
The “Vogalonga”, a rowing race 30 km long and finishing at Grand Canal, on the fourth Sunday of May.
The “Regata della Sensa”, on the third Sunday of May.
The “Regata del Redentore”, with spectacular fireworks, on the third Sunday of July.
The Venice Film Festival takes place in late August and early September.
The Art Biennale starts in June in odd numbered years.
