The Portobello Hotel
Rock ‘n’ roll factor:
The Portobello is a rock ‘n’ roll institution. Tucked away down one of those statuesque Notting Hill streets, this is the original boutique hotel that prides itself on being a bit of an eccentric outsider. U2’s Bono and Van Morrison have been coming for years, while more recent guests include cult band The White Stripes and the pop princess herself, Kylie Minogue. She may have recommended it to some time duet partner, Nick Cave who checked in recently with his son. Robbie Williams chose to stay in Room 13, otherwise known as The Big Four-Poster Room with an Elizabethan bed so high you need a ladder to climb into it. Some of the rooms are as legendary as the guests themselves, such as the one with a Victorian bathing machine beside a massive round bed. This is the room where Kate Moss and Johnny Depp reportedly filled the bath with champagne.
Go wild
Two fully-fledged Moroccan chambers are tucked under the roof. Moody, dark and dangerously seductive, their rich reds and layers of carpets and cushions evoke the atmosphere of a Berber tent. Just right for an after show come down.
