Winter sun and shopping in Dubai at The Address, Downtown Burj Dubai
  The Address, Downtown Burj Dubai

With a name like The Address, you’d expect five-star luxury in a place that’s like no other, but Dubai is full of “places like no other” and in this case The Address is still in the middle of a bit of a building site. Once you’ve navigated your way from the main road, through the hoards of construction camps and found your way into the hotel however, you’re a world away from hectic Dubai and in the perfect location to do a bit of shopping. The Address is conveniently located next to the huge Dubai Mall, which boasts one of the world's largest aquariums and the world's largest indoor Gold Souk, as well as a complete entertainment complex with a mammoth array of dining options (in case you can’t afford the in-house restaurants).

On my visit I was lucky enough to be upgraded to an Executive Club Suite, which had an open plan bedroom/bathroom with a stand-alone bathtub in the middle of the beautiful room. Don’t worry though, if you’re shy, (or unmarried, sssssh) you can opt to pull the automatic blind down and cleanse yourself in privacy. The views are what makes this hotel, though. Our suite overlooked the most stunning of manmade vistas – the impressive dancing fountains, right in front of the (as yet unfinished) Burj Dubai: the word’s largest building, in case you’ve been living in a cave.

For a slice of winter sun, a fantastic shopping holiday, or a great Christmas holiday in a glamorous location, The Address is probably the best location in Dubai. It’s not near the beach – for that you need to get a taxi to the other side of the city, near Jumeirah – but the infinity pool overlooking the fountains (and the mall – interestingly enough) puts you right in the heart of bustling downtown Dubai, close to everything you need. The temperature controlled pool spills over five levels and includes a kids’ pool. We spent a good few hours chilling out on the comfy wooden sunbeds placed around its edges, and taking it turns to try the shaded hammocks.

The Club Lounge (available only for those staying in Club Rooms and Suites) has a great terrace for watching the fountains. We ate all our meals up there and the food was adequate for a Club Lounge. We were however given a very poor and watery Mojito before we settled with a couple of safer Gin and Tonics. There’s not much variety and portions (and plates) are on the small side, but if you’re looking for a snack and a complimentary drink while soaking up the views of the dancing fountains, then you really can’t go wrong. For something more satisfying, with a lot more atmosphere, a short stroll along the fake waterfront offers a host of great dinner spots, all with fantastic views for photo opportunities. The California Pizza Kitchen does a great selection of the obvious.
