42 The Calls, Leeds
A former mill, 42 The Calls is the hotel that began Leeds’ gradual transformation into a hip northern city when it opened in 1991. Since then it’s become the favourite Leeds hotel for a host of popstars. Gwen Stephanie, Snow Patrol, The Libertines and McFly have all checked in recently to one of just 41 bedrooms and suites with their exposed mill pulleys and handmade beds. Two of Yorkshire’s finest restaurants share the same premises, Brasserie Forty 4 and the Michelin-starred Pool Court at 42. Guests can dine at other leading restaurants in the city and sign for their meals and have the charge posted to their hotel bill. Great for popstars who want the minimum of fuss.
Go wild
The Penthouse bathroom is wired for sound and the CD player even has speakers in the multi-jet shower. With privacy hatches into all rooms, after gig room service needn’t intrude on post-concert parties.
The rider
Mini-bar, interactive television and frog-shaped soap in the bathroom. Smarties are placed on pillows at turndown (not to be confused with narcotics) and homemade cookies are available and were apparently requested by McFly – lightweights. Double rooms start from £170.
