La Paix Bed & Breakfast - Stay on a Normandy Lavender Farm
La Paix is a delightful B&B overlooking a small lavender farm at St Germain du Crioult, not far from the river gorges of the Suisse Normande in the department of Calvados.
Dutch-born Corey Koch and her British partner Bob Kyle moved permanently to Corey’s holiday house in 2004, planting 5000 young lavender plants in 2005, and opening a summer tea room two years later in response to demand from passing walkers.
‘I’ve been using essential oils for years and didn’t see why I couldn’t grow lavender here, so I searched the internet for advice,’ explains Corey. ‘We chose lavandula grosso, a frost-resistant variety with a high yield of essential oils, bought a mobile still, and now cut the lavender by hand in late summer to produce our own oil – a touch of Provence in the land of William the Conqueror!’
They serve English cream teas with Cornish clotted cream between May and September and on fine weekends in spring and autumn – a huge hit with French visitors as well as Brits. Customers can sit at a table outside the tea pavilion or settle down amongst the perfumed plants. Book in advance and you can even relax with a well-stocked picnic hamper.
In spring 2009, Bob converted an old barn adjacent to the house into self-contained B&B accommodation with kitchenette, living room, and of course lavender views in season. A great base for walking and canoeing in the gorges of the Suisse Normande and just an hour from the D-Day beaches, 90 minutes from Mont St Michel.
