Christmas Markets in Prague

Christmas Markets in Prague

Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the all-important gift shopping. But, if you would like to steer away from the madness and frenzy of high street shopping this year then perhaps consider heading to Prague for a more joyful experience.

Christmas is a magical time in Prague and its traditional Christmas Markets are an essential part of the magic. These markets (vánoní trhy) , which light up town squares and streets throughout December, fill thecity with a warm holiday spirit. Both locals and visitors throng to them, not just for the unique shopping they offer, but also to share the festive spirit with family and friends.

Just wandering along rows and rows of beautifully decorated wooden huts, shopping for all manner of traditional holiday items with a glass of delicious mulled wine in hand or a warm baked apple is enough to put the romance back into Christmas and lift your spirits.

You would be hard-pressed to find anything here of the mass-produced variety, just handmade works of art. Wooden toys, puppets and Babushka dolls, crib figurines, scented candles, handmade glass, greeting cards, lambskin bags and shoes ... just some of the things you will find for those Christmas stockings.

You may be distracted every now then by the wafting aromas of hot grilled sausages, freshly baked bread and roasted chestnuts but, hey, there's no rush. It's all about soaking in the magic and, when you are done with one market, you can head to the next one on the list.

Prague's Christmas markets start on the fourth Saturday before Christmas Eve and run until the beginning of January. They are open every day from 9am to 7pm and are beautifully lit up after dark. Despite the cold the markets remain busy through the festive period.

The main markets are at the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, with smaller ones at Namesti Republiky & Havelske Trziste and Namesti Miru. All are within walking distance of each other and also accessible by metro and tram services.
