5 Napkin Burger, New York
When a New Yorker tells you solemnly that 5 Napkin Burger is the best burger joint in the city, it’s time to pay attention. The Big Apple isn’t short of good restaurants, and you’re never more than a short walk from somewhere to get a burger, so the competition is tough.
But there’s no flashness about this diner-style restaurant in Midtown, on the corner of 45th Street and 9th Avenue. Packed at lunchtime as well, there’s plenty of people-watching to be done – the man with his elderly mother, sitting, eating and not exchanging a single word to the guys at the small bar who’ve already started on the beer.
The menu has some unexpected additions – as well as typical starters like onion rings, there’s French onion soup and Vietnamese dishes, as well as sushi, plus salads and a few non-burger alternatives for a main dish.
It’s hard to beat the Original 5 Napkin burger, with its trademark rosemary aioli and caramelized onions. You can choose how you want the beef cooked, and choose to have it without cheese if you prefer, but when it wins awards for ‘Best New Burger’, it’s best not to tamper with perfection too much.
The best burger in New York City? It's hard to say for definite without many years' intensive testing, but there's no doubt 5 Napkin Burger is a very strong contender.
