Desnivel: the best steak in Buenos Aires
Without a doubt, Desnivel serves up the best steak I had the pleasure of eating in Argentina, possibly the world.
Every evening from 9pm this Buenos Aires institution has a queue of carnivores winding into the street. They come for great steak in unpretentious surrounds.
Desnivel doesn’t dress up its food with fancy place settings, candlelight or a hyperbolic menu. Instead, waiters dressed in white shirts with black tie rush around the simple tables amid an atmosphere of happy chatter.
The best cut of meat on the menu is the tenderloin steak (bife de lomo). I ordered it twice, first medium and then rare. In my experience, steak in Argentina tends to be cooked a little on the overdone side – I like my steak medium rare, so rare was perfect. My partner went first for the tenderloin and then the flank (vacio) and declared the more expensive tenderloin to be far superior, the flank being too far on the fatty side.
We opted for a side of chips and salad, to keep it simple. The chips were superb – anyone who knows me knows I am something of a chip connoisseur: hand cut, long, lightly crisped and with the skin on. I have also been told, by locals in the know, that the pasta is excellent.
For the ultimate steak meal in Buenos Aires though, simply order a steak and a bottle of Argentine red wine. You won’t need anything else ,and in Desnivel, both your taste buds and your wallet will thank you.
