Traditional Philippine ‘Hilot’ Massage at Shangri La Hotel, Dubai
Being something of a massage connoisseur I’m always intrigued to find a technique of massage that I haven’t yet tried. And this was the case when I stumbled across the ‘hilot’ massage at the Shangri-La, Dubai.
Originating in the Philippines. The deep tissue treatment involves applying a warm mixture of coconut oil and traditional Filipino herbs directly onto various body parts with banana leaves. Designed to correct blockages and energy imbalances in the body hilot involves touch diagnosis, whereby the therapist tailors the massage to counteract these imbalances.
As my therapist’s hands expertly eased stubborn tight knots in my shoulders and upper back, I drifted in and out of consciousness. And, just when I thought my scalp was going to be neglected, my therapist proceeded to give me one of the best scalp massages I’ve had. The treatment ended with the gentle ringing of the singing bowl and all too quickly I was brought back to reality.
Verdict: Officially my new favourite treatment in Dubai - and the ultimate antidote to a week of stress at work!
