Apparently William the Conqueror liked to visit Old Sarum Castle, perched high above the Salisbury Plain and site of the ancient city of Salisbury.  Mind you, had The Swan Inn been around in those days, no doubt he’d have jumped at the chance to stay there instead.

Its warm atmosphere, friendly staff and comfortable rooms with squashy duvets and pillows are extremely tempting. What's more, this traditional Inn, creaking with character, is also the ideal base to explore fascinating places of interest including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Stonehenge, prehistoric Avebury stone circle, Longleat House and Safari Park, Wilton House and the City of Salisbury with its medieval cathedral and soaring spire, tallest in the land.

After a hard day’s sightseeing, it is always a pleasure to return to The Swan to enjoy a relaxing candlelit dinner.  The menu, a many splendoured thing, offers delights like  'Swan's Fish Pie' bursting with flavour from the sea.  This bumper platter of haddock, smoked salmon and prawns in a cream sauce is topped with cheese mash (£10.50).  The roast butternut squash with goats cheese, pinenuts and tomato sauce (£8) is a veggie's dream, while meat lovers might prefer the braised brisket of beef with mash, red wine and cranberry sauce (£9).

Wherever possible, the food, including handmade sausages, Wiltshire cured ham, award winning cheeses and home baked breads, is sourced locally to help support local businesses.  It all adds up to an imaginative menu, a delicious combination of simplicity and decadence.  It isn't short on imagination either - take for example, the dandelion and burdock trifle and the Stourhead farm faggots with onion gravy.

The Inn caters for small corporate functions, private functions, events including christenings and birthdays and can also offer wedding receptions in a marquee accommodating up to 70 people, in a gloriously romantic location by the river.

Prices from £65 per night bed and full English breakfast.

Enjoy England and AA 4* rated.
