Salzburg is Austria's most bicycle-friendly city with over 100km of bike paths.

Cycling is a fun way to explore this beautiful town and a bicycle is usually faster and certainly cheaper than public transport. There are underpasses for cyclists on both sides of the Salzach river to ensure that cyclists do not need to cross bridges and main roads.

For an unusual way to see the sights here in Mozart’s city, take a guided cycling tour where qualified guides lead you along car free paths. Sound of Music fans could do no better than take the 3 ½ hour ‘Fraulein Maria’s Bicycle Tour’ to visit locations from the film. This avoids busy roads so is suitable for children too.

Serious cyclists meanwhile, may prefer to take the 450 km long Mozart Bike Path which winds through the countryside around the city. Great exercise combined with stunning scenery, what more could you want?

• Bike hire: Top Bike Salzburg  www.topbike.at ; tel: (06272) 4656
• ‘Fraulein Maria’s Bicycle Tour’ leaves daily at 9.30 am from May to September from  Mirabellplatz. All bicycles, helmets, child seats and other accessories are provided.
