Fly down to Butterfly Restaurant @ Pier 33, Embarcadero, San Francisco for floor to ceiling windows overlooking San Francisco Bay.

It's very close to the Ferry Terminal for Alcatraz and is a great way to celebrate your ‘freedom' after a tour of Alcatraz Prison across the bay.

Specialising in all types of Asian food, from Vietnamese to Thai to Korean, owner-chef Robert Lam, has been called a ‘Rising Star Chef' by the San Francisco Chronicle, and you can see him at work, as he runs an ‘open kitchen' at his new restaurant.

The restaurant has also recently been given the ‘Award of Excellence' by the ‘Wine Spectator magazine'.

The décor is modern and the walls are dripping with wonderful art by local artists, there is a choice of dining rooms and there's a smart deck outside.

The food is adventurous and superb -

Cold appetisers include -

Hamachi Sashimi - ($11), Stir Fry of Shishito Peppers and Smoked Salmon Belly, Wasabi Yuzu Foam, Avocado.

Or local favourite-

Duo of Local Dungeness Crab 1 ½ pounds (Price varies), Wok Seared Garlic and Pepper Crab, Crab Fried Black Rice, Meyer Lemon Aioli -Crab Won Ton Dumplings, Shiitake Mushroom and Shrimp Consommé.

If you prefer something hot, why not try Sonoma Liberty Duck Confit Spring Rolls ($9), Chinese Hot Mustard and Honey Dipping Sauce.

For Main Course, I recommend the fabulous

Sesame Crusted Ahi Bros. Yellow fin Tuna ($22), Scallop Stir Fry Stuffed Onion Ring, Celery Root Purée, Sweet Pepper and Soy Sauce Reduction, Micro Wasabi Greens, Red Chilli Sesame Oil.

All Desserts are just Six dollars, so there's no point in resisting, is there?

For chocoholics like me, there's the exquisite Chocolate Chip & Almond Cookies with chilled Vietnamese coffee and tiny Crème Brulée

Apple & Candied Ginger Cobbler, served with Vanilla Ice-cream and caramel sauce - yummy!

Tip

On a Budget?

Every Tuesday to Friday, Butterfly has a Happy Hour! From 4pm - 7pm you can experience $1 appetizers of -

Oyster Shooters - Bloody Mary sauce with garlic and coriander gremolata.

Or for just five dollars how's about a few rings of Fire Fried Calamari with toasted garlic, ponzu marinated cucumbers and Tabasco remoulade

Wash it all down with the ‘Cocktail of the Day' or a sweet, smooth Cherry Blossom Effen black cherry vodka, lemon, brandied cherry for a measly

FIVE DOLLARS!

On Friday and Saturday nights, at around 9pm Butterfly has drinks specials and delicious ‘bites', accompanied by music. Some weekends, from 10pm, the venue is used by various DJ's and promoters when an entrance fee of $10+ is charged. Check first for details.

Reservations recommended, so call in advance +1 415 864 8999 if you want to book a table by the window, you won't be disappointed!
