The Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco
The luxurious Fairmont Hotel is a true San Francisco landmark. Perched on the crest of the posh Nob Hill neighbourhood, the Fairmont's classic ambience, breathtaking views, and impeccable service attract a loyal clientele. It's no wonder when Tony Bennett first sang "I left My Heart in San Fransisco", it was at this historic venue.
History
Fairmont was built by American socialites, Tessie and Virginia Fair, in honour of their father, the mining millionaire, James "Bonanza Jim" Graham Fair. The hotel was completed in 1906 only to see its sumptuous interiors destroyed by the city's great 1906 earthquake and fire. A speedy remodelling overseen by famed architect Julia Morgan led to a triumphant reopening exactly one year later.
Rooms & Amenities
The Fairmont's 591 elegant rooms and suites feature the modern luxury amenities of Frette linens, Miller Harris toiletries, marble baths, flat-screen TVs, and Bose sound systems. Standard rooms are 30 square metres, but the 61 suites range in size from 195-440 square metres. Business travellers will appreciate the spacious work desks, multi-line telephones, and high-speed Internet access.
The Tower Suites offer the most spectacular views, with prospects of downtown, North Beach, the Bay Bridge, Alcatraz, Grace Cathedral, and Huntington Park, plus a telescope to enjoy them. Such views, along with beautiful terraces, ballrooms, and meeting spaces, make the Fairmont a popular destination for special events like weddings and conferences.
Restaurants & Bars
When hunger strikes, head to the grand lobby to dine at the Laurel Court restaurant and bar. Fresh regional ingredients and special, single-vineyard wines take center stage here. For lighter fare, reserve a table for the daily high tea. A livelier atmosphere is found at the onsite Tonga Room, but visitors should also venture out to explore the variety of restaurants and bars nearby.
Location
Conveniently located near San Francisco's downtown, Union Square is a ten-minute walk downhill, and the cable car to Fisherman's Wharf just one block away. Other nearby attractions include Chinatown, the Cable Car Museum, and the theatre district. Also relatively close are downtown museums (SFMoMa, Jewish Contemporary Museum, Cartoon Art Museum), and the Ferry Building.
Taxis and car rental with Hertz Car are both available in front of the hotel.
